JP’s 5 for Friday 3/3/2023

I’ve been listening to the Slough House Series of novels this week as my sleep stories and they are perfect! Mick Herron applies the ideal balance of poetry and grit in his writing to satisy lit nerds like me while still keeping the plot moving along at a nice healthy clip, and the stories are just intricate enough to lead me down the path to sleepy time and vivid dreams! From what I’ve been able to piece together as I drift off, Slough House is a mix between The Gray Man, and the halfway house in Infinite Jest, mixed with just a dash of The Uncanny X-Men.
Although it requires a slightly more thoughtful approach than the purge-tastic teachings of Marie Kondo, the Design Thinking inherent in knolling makes this concept incredibly attractive for creative types who actually need their tools organized and close at hand…who knows it might be cool for you too!
Reading this blurb of a man I never knew, I was moved by the passion and appropriateness of the prose and knew that this ode to a poet must have come from the hand of another raconteur...Patti Smith.
A  taste: “He awoke to the sound of water dripping into a rusted sink. The streets below were bathed in medieval moonlight, reverberating silence. He lay there grappling with the terror of beauty, as the night unfolded like a Chinese screen.”
I usually don’t go for non-fiction much, but great writing is great writing regardless of genre, and I’ve always been a fan of applying an academic literary lens to areas of life typically left untouched by such erudition, like David Foster Wallace’s famous thesis on rap, and Hunter S. Thompson does an astounding job of taking us inside the lives of The Hells Angels using the highly attuned antennae of the poet journalist. I just started this Strange and Terrible Saga, so I’ll let you know how it turns out!

If you’ve yet to journey to the bucolic beachside beauty that is Tulum, then may I suggest you go… immediately…and while you’re at it, check out my friend Tim’s Boutique Hotel
